Abstract
This article examines how the consolidation of modern states articulated a nationalization of language that
conditioned poetics and translation practices in Spain, France, and England. Through three scenes—Castilian
imperial grammar (Nebrija and the Golden Age), French classical codification (Villers-Cotterêts, Malherbe,
belles infidèles), and English mediation (Cowley, Denham, Dryden, Tytler)—it shows translation as a political technology of cultural homogenization, translator invisibility, and domestication of foreignness, reconfiguring relations between fidelity, style, and language policy. As a projection/counterpoint, German Romanticism (Herder, Humboldt, Schleiermacher, Schlegel) problematizes this ethnocentric gesture and reinterprets translation as openness to alterity, without reducing it to literalism. The contribution delineates (i) the historical-conceptual scope of the translation/State nexus and (ii) the specificity of the Romantic “turn.” The
conclusion discusses the contemporary relevance of these models and their dialogue with philosophical
lexicography.
