Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration.
  • The submission file is in Word format.
  • The text conforms to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines below.

Author Guidelines

  1. The manuscript must be submitted in Word format. Please use the following template as a guide for its preparation: [plantilla]. In addition to the manuscript, a separate document containing authorship information must be submitted. The mandatory information included in this document is: full name, academic degree, institutional affiliation, ORCID, and email address. In the case of works with multiple authors, all authors must provide this information. Submissions must be made entirely through the journal's system. Documents submitted by email or any other means will not be accepted.
  2. The manuscript must strictly adhere to the international citation standards of the APA 7th edition (https://www.apa.org/) and must not exceed 8,000 words, including the abstract and keywords in Spanish, English, and Portuguese, notes, bibliography, and appendices (graphs, figures, tables, illustrations, and/or photographs).
  3. The manuscript must have 1-inch margins on all four sides, letter-sized paper, and consecutively numbered pages with Arabic numerals located in the upper right corner, in 11-point Times New Roman font.
  4. The manuscript must include a brief title (maximum 20 words), an abstract (150 to 200 words), and five keywords, all in Spanish, English, and Portuguese. The order of these elements will be as follows: title, title in Spanish, title in Portuguese, abstract, keywords, resumen, palabras clave, resumo and palavras-chave.
  5. The title must be in 12-point Times New Roman font, lowercase, bold, centered, 1.5 line spacing, no indentation, no spacing before or after, and no period. The title in Spanish and Portuguese must not be bold.
  6. For the abstract and summary, use 11-point Times New Roman font, lowercase, justified alignment, single-spaced, no indentation, no spacing before or after, and a period. They must be preceded by the words "Abstract", "Resumen", and "Resumo" respectively, in 11-point Times New Roman font, lowercase, bold, followed by a period.
  7. For keywords, use 11-point Times New Roman font, lowercase, justified alignment, single-spaced, no indentation, no spacing before or after, and a period. Use a semicolon between each keyword and the next. They must be preceded by the terms "Keywords," "Keywords," and "Palavras-chaves," respectively, in 11-point Times New Roman font, lowercase, bold, followed by a colon.
  8. The different sections of the text (including the bibliography) will be preceded by section headings, for which 12-point Times New Roman font will be used, bold, justified alignment, 1.5 line spacing, without indentation, with spacing before, but without spacing after and without a period.
  9. The different sections of the text (including the bibliography) will be preceded by section headings. These will be in 12-point Times New Roman font, bold, justified, line spacing 1.5, unindented, with spacing before, but no spacing after, and without a period.
  10. The use of subheadings (headings subordinate to section headings) is not recommended. However, if absolutely necessary, they will only be accepted at a single level. This means that a subheading cannot itself have a subheading. These will be in 12-point Times New Roman font, bold, italics, justified, line spacing 1.5, unindented, with spacing before, but no spacing after, and without a period.
  11. The body of the text must be in 12-point Times New Roman font, lowercase, justified, 1.5 line spacing, indented 1.25 centimeters from the left margin on the first line (except for the first paragraph of the article and the first paragraph of each section, which must not be indented), with no spacing before or after.
  12. Long quotation marks (more than 40 words) must be in a separate paragraph, in 11-point Times New Roman font, lowercase, indented 1.25 centimeters from the left margin, with no indentation on the right margin, single-spaced, justified, without quotation marks, with spacing before and after, and with a period.
  13. Quotation marks must be used exclusively for quotations. For expressions that the author wishes to emphasize and do not correspond to quotations, single quotation marks must be used, and italics must be reserved exclusively for expressions in a foreign language. 13. Very limited use of footnotes is required. Under no circumstances should they be used to indicate bibliographic references. If strictly necessary, they should be placed at the bottom of the page (not at the end of the manuscript) in 10-point Times New Roman font, single-spaced, and justified. The footnote number in the body of the text should be inserted after the punctuation mark.
  14. For the bibliography, use 12-point Times New Roman font, lowercase, justified alignment, 1.5 line spacing, a hanging indent of 1.25 centimeters, with no space before or after, and a period. The format of each reference must strictly adhere to the latest edition of APA 7th edition (https://www.apa.org/), and only works actually cited in the text must be referenced. References to books should include only the publisher, not the place of publication. In references with a DOI, the DOI must be included in HTML format and not in "DOI:..." format. URLs must not be preceded by "Retrieved from" unless a retrieval date is required.
  15. Graphs, figures, tables, illustrations, and/or photographs must also comply with APA standards. Authors must ensure they have authorization for the reproduction and publication of graphs, figures, tables, illustrations, and/or photographs that are not their own creation, and in all cases must include the source.
  16. Reviews must be submitted in Word format, 12-point Times New Roman font, 1.5 line spacing, 2.54-centimeter margins on each of the four sides, letter-sized paper, and consecutively numbered pages with Arabic numerals located in the upper right corner. They must not exceed 2,000 words. They must not include an abstract or keywords. The title must include the name of the author of the reviewed book, the title of the book, and publication information.

Editorial Policies

The journal will not accept articles during the months of June and December due to the editing process of the next issue. Articles will also not be accepted during the month of February due to a legal holiday.

Universum has a strict policy against academic inbreeding, so articles by researchers affiliated with the University of Talca will not be published, unless exceptional authorization is granted by the Editorial Committee to submit a manuscript for review.

Contributions submitted by authors must comply with the journal's editorial standards. Manuscripts that do not comply with the journal's formal guidelines will be automatically rejected. Furthermore, the manuscript's potential funding source, corresponding acknowledgments, and any potential conflicts of interest must be mentioned. The original manuscripts received will initially be reviewed by the Editorial Committee to verify their adherence to the editorial guidelines and the journal's format. Only after being accepted in their original form by the Editorial Committee will manuscripts be sent for anonymous review by experts in the subject matter, who will issue reports that will be considered for the final decision. The Editorial Committee will respond to the authors as soon as possible and may request clarifications or modifications to the originals. In these situations, the authors must submit a new version of their text within twenty business days of receiving the notification. If the authors do not respond within the specified period, the Editorial Committee may definitively reject the work.

Once the contribution is accepted, it will be published in one of the following issues of the journal; the Editorial Committee cannot commit to publishing it in a specific issue. However, during the editing process, the authors may be consulted if difficulties arise and it is necessary. In any case, if deemed appropriate, the text may be revised in style.
