Abstract
The Cold War had a significant impact on Latin America during the 1960s. This was reflected in various artistic expressions, especially in graphic humor, which became a key medium for expressing the tensions of the political context. This paper argues that Chilean graphic humor of the time portrayed Latin America in a scenario of growing politicization and the rise of Latin Americanism, highlighting two predominant conceptions of the region: one passive, seen as a space of dispute between the great powers, and another active, confronting those same powers. The representation of Latin America, although not new at the time, gained prominence in political caricature and became a figure of constant tension. Common themes in these representations included the defense of democracy and the emergence of the region as a unified entity. A documentary corpus of 178 caricatures from media outlets with different political stances, such as El Siglo, El Mercurio, El Diario Ilustrado, and Topaze, served as the foundation for this research. The study demonstrates that graphic humor was an influential medium for creating and disseminating social and political representations during this period.
