Abstract

Most studies in the field of arts have frequently focused on aesthetic analysis of an artwork, a period or an artist. However, previous studies have not dealt with artistic evaluation practices held by experts who are well-positioned in institutions and in an artistic field. This article examines the work of expert jurors of theatre in Argentina. The research shows which debates related to emotions, aesthetics and justice take part in jurors’ evaluation practices. The study provides new insights in the field of sociology of arts, by establishing a dialogue between Hennion’s pragmatic scope and Bourdieu’s disposicionalist theory. The evidence presented suggests the importance of an emotional training in jurors, the suspension of expert conceptual background and the distance towards objectivity. The findings can contribute to a better understanding of official cultural policies of artistic recognition within a nation. This article is based in in- depth interviews held with jurors, in the context of my doctoral research which explored other social actors in this field.
